The production

The company's technicians, thanks to the know how acquired in several years of experience, develop continuously the production plant with advanced technological innovations, to improve the performance, paying attention to the satisfaction of a customer always looking for a high quality product.

Demus has four lines of production for green coffee decaffeination. These plants work with a continuous cycle and are controlled by skilled workers properly trained, careful and involved in the continuous process control, to obtain a product always responding to the high quality standards obtained by the company.

Production process description

Green coffee is pneumatically transferred from the warehouse to a big vessel called extractor, where the beans are previously swelled with steam, then caffeine is extracted by multiple washing with the solvent (dichloromethane).

After extraction of caffeine, coffee beans first undergo a vaporization phase where are treated with steam to eliminate any residual trace of solvent, then the beans are dried by hot air to eliminate the excess of water; at the end of the process coffee is cooled by forced air and is ready for sacking.

The lot size for every production line is 3000 kg, and the unique auxiliary substance used is dichloromethane as extraction solvent (purer than common food solvent); after the extractions, it is distilled and returns to the storage tanks to be reutilised for another cycle.

After the distillation of the solvent, an aqueous solution – made of caffeine and waxes – remains in the bottom of the tank. This is transferred in the refining unit where waxes are separated by caffeine.
